SCENIC SUNDAYS: Lilac Time!

These photos are from last year, but it's almost time...the lilac bush is full of buds waiting to burst out of their protective coverings!

Lilacs always make me think of Jamie, these were her favorites, and I thought she'd enjoy these images of the Heaven-sent blooms today.

Happy Sunday, all!

PS: For those of you who don't know, there's a story behind our lilac bush. It's planted on the fence row at our old farmhouse. We were asked by a member of the original family that built this old house not to ever move or remove the lilac bush. Farmer Owen's twin sons, who were stillborn are buried under the lilac bush. So in the spring, I always remember their sister Bernice's request and remember the sons their mother never got to know.

I love lilac's. Our old home had two lilac trees. I enjoyed having lilacs in the house..my husband hated it,,sinus problems, lol.

Now my neighbor has one that faces our back gate. So now I can enjoy the smell, the view but my husband can relax with no worries of me bringing them into the house, lol

Our next door neighbors here at the rental house have a lilac bush right on the property line. So I picked a few blooms hanging over "my" side. :-) I LOVE the smell!

I'm so jealous. There were so many lilac bushes surrounding our yard where I grew up in MI and they are my favorite flower of all time. Here on the Gulf Coast of TX they simply will not grow and I have had to do without for almost 30 years. I can still smell the scent filling the house just from opening the windows. Ahhhh

I remember your post from last year - was yours the story about workmen stopping to smell your lilacs? I love them, I find some to "steal" every year cause my bushes are so stragely.
I would love to have a long, long hedge of them someday...
Your blog is looking so great!

At our old farmhouse we had a lilac bush that was over 100 years old! It was a car stopper when it was in full bloom!
I loooooooove lilacs and love to have them all over the house!
They smell soooo good!

I think it is wonderful that they shared that story with you about the lilacs ...... I think it makes you apreciate them even more!

Enjoy,

These are one of my favorites...especially the older varieties, these and hyacynths. Fragrance of these can't be beat and the colors..I like your choice of music..from the 40's---love it..
yep...kindred souls. Do you know if these can be rooted? I had a vintage rose bush I started that way..it is now very prolific bloomer, pretty soon it will bloom, I started it from a cutting.
Wonder if you can do this with lilacs?

How I love all the free bouquets all through May from these perfumed beauties. My Mom had just about every color. Fortunately there were several bushes here when we bought the house. They remind me how close to delivery I was at this time of year with my oldest, a May 14th baby. My grandma planted a rose bush I believe where her miscarried twins lie. It was kind of the way back then and how respectful of you to honor their memory.Yep,enjoy them while last.GREAT PHOTOS..can almost smell them on the comp HA!

Beautiful lilacs! Mine have gone by now but I sure did enjoy them and the butterflies while they were blooming.

Oh my goodness...I love lilacs and yours are gorgeous. Reminds me of childhood...when we had 2 huge lilac bushes...until my dad cut them down to make room for his putting green. Let me tell you, life was NEVER the same:-)

What a touching sad story of the twin babies...but also so uplifting that they can always be remembered and now you have shared that with us too. I will think of this story often...Farmer Owen's sons...how special....

It will be awhile before our blooms, but I do have tiny leaves. To answer Faith, yes you can take the small "sprouts" that grow around the base of the plant and re-plant them. That's how I've planted all of mine at the house I live in and on my vacant land 4 yrs. ago where I am now building a house. They all grew, even in our norhtern sand!
I new bedroom will be decorated with lilacs....Joni, you'll have to frame one of these pictures for my room!?! (please??). Still looking for lilac border for all those bloggers out there. Thanks!

With our economy and state of affairs, Michigan isn't an attractive place to live right now. But, God has blessed us with some natural beauty, not the least of which are the beautiful lilacs! Thanks for sharing the photo's. I'd like to plant a few in my yard this year!
