Thriftin' on a Thursday: Vintage Shiny Brites!

The fronts, the label on the hanger reads "Poland".

Sometimes, on a Thursday, even when you're tired, and it's hot, and you really don't want to stop at that garage sale, you probably should.

 The backs of the same.

Because sometimes, underneath a table in that garage, there will be a dirty old box, with boxes inside.

And the label will say "$3 WHOLE BOX.
(You stifle a scream!)

And you'll buy it.

Then take it home.

And look through your treasure trove.

(Because you didn't look before you bought, you only saw the SHINY BRITE label, and decided "yes!".)

Then you might say "Oh, MY.  GOSH.  It REALLY STINKS!!"

Like fifty years worth of chain-smoking stink.
Yes, that kind.  ((CHOKE))

So, you might want to leave them out on your porch for a month to air out.

And they still stink!

You might think, "Are they worth saving?"

Well...you might say...

They got put back out there for another few weeks.

I figure I've got until Christmas, I'll wait!

Our air turned cool and crisp on Monday.  I'm thinking it might take less time with this turn of events!

Oh, I hope they air out, too! Those are beautiful. They remind me of the ornaments my favorite aunt always had on her tree. I inherited some and take extra special care of them.

Oh lucky you!!! I love those ornaments and have a box full myself and my beatiful silver tree to hang them...perhaps placing a dryer sheet in the box might help...keeping my fingers crossed for you!

You got me at "Poland". I'm 100% Polish-American. (This drives my husband nuts...he wants me to just say 100% American...but the Pole in me just can't let it go!) :)

I hope they air out...what a shame. I'm sure there's got to be something that could be created with those if they still are stinky...

XO,
Val

I've scored some Shiny Brites at Goodwill, and I feel like I've one the jackpot! Can you stuff some newspaper around them (that takes out smells) or put them in a box with charcoal briskets at the bottom, I don't know. Good luck!

Nice! I hope they air out because they are so pretty!

Great find; try putting them in a box with a lot of baking soda. The soda should absorb the odor and if need be, add some charcoal.

It could be the boxes, if you had something else to put them in. They are really beautiful.

Wow. You nabbed an INCREDIBLE buy! They are simply beautiful. Could you gently wipe them off? They are perfect for The Old Centennial Farmhouse.

I read your post about 9/11 and I just had to look at some saner, more peaceful photos on this blog. Didn't even want to think about the horror and loss of life, just wanted to lose myself and forget by looking at your photos. Thanks, I needed that.

OOOOOOOOOHHHHH! What beauties! I wonder if a Bounce Fabric Softener Sheet would help? And I wonder if just removing them from their cardboard boxes would help as well, maybe place the ornies in empty egg cartons for now and try to air them out that way? It may be the cardboard which is holding the smoke smell.

Don't toss them out yet!
