What Was Your First Job?

DO you remember...

What it was you did...

Your first job...

That came with a REAL paycheck?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mine?
I worked in a hardware store, as a combination of
payroll clerk, secretary and cashier.
I made $1.85 an hour for my first wage!
I learned a lot, working in a hardware store,  information I would keep and use for my whole life.
(I also learned that plumbing parts can have very
embarrassing names--especially when I had to write out
those  charge tickets longhand while the (male) customers watched and waited.  I literally turned red from blushing!).
What was YOUR first job?
What did you make an hour?
Fun stuff to recall!
I think about this often and sooo wish I had a copy of my pay stub ... I made $2.83 an hour, 1970, registered nurse, ICU on 3-11 shift, so I made a bit bit more than the nurses working 7-3 on a med surg floor. Love reflecting, thanks for taking me on a trip down memory lane. E in TN
Interesting! I posted on this very subject (A Real Paying Job, 5-5-11). My job was different from most because I'm older and didn't have as many opportunities. Your job sounds fun though.
My first job was working at a fast food place called Pup 'n' Taco. They no longer exist :-) I did more cashiering than anything because they realized I could count back change :-)
Blessings,
I typed freight bills (8 layers) for Wolverine Freight Express in Muskegon Michigan. From 4-9 M-F while going to community college full time in the day. I made $2.85 an hour - much more than all my friends working at JC Pennys for $2.00
My first job was working at our small town diner. I was the cook, waitress, cashier and dishwasher (by hand). I was 15 and working 40 hours a week. I worked my shift all by myself and was dead tired at the end of it. I made 2.50 an hour.
At 26 I worked in a hospital kitchen making $1.65 an hour. It was hard work and the other employees gave me a hard time. Great encouragement to get an education.
Oh my goodness - I worked at a drugstore lunch counter. Back when they had a row of stools and maybe 3 booths. You could get a fountain coke and hot dog or a grilled cheese, BLT, egg sandwich, etc. I loved it. I did the cash register and cooked (if you call that cooking) but it was so much fun. I don't remember what I made but it wasn't much. I really loved that job. I was 16.
Other than babysitting my first job was at a Hallmark store. The owner was an alcoholic who came in late and left early, leaving me to open and close the store at the age of 16. It was good for me to learn how to talk to people. I enjoyed being a cashier,gift wrapping and creating displays. I wish I had saved my first paystub too!
I worked at the Hardware store like you Mom. I believe they started paying me for helping you when I was 12. $3.25 an hour and I thought I was so rich! I still have my first paycheck stub somewhere around here. :) But, I really started helping run the register at 6 yrs old with Lucille. Paid in DumDum suckers of course!
I love all your comments about what your first jobs were! Lunch counters and hardware stores.
My first job was picking strawberries in a field in Maine. I was probably 14 or 15.... We were paid a few cents for each flat we picked. I am glad I don't have to do that now!!!!
My first job was at a veterinary clinic. Office work mostly, but I did have to do a few very disturbing animal related tasks as well. I'll spare you the deets.
I wish I could remember my wage!
My first job was a short summer job. I worked for a school district stamping the inside covers of new textbooks with the information: 'This book is the property of:' and then, a pupil would write their name inside the book, the date, and record the condition of the book. Now that I think about it, why? Why did they need the condtion of the book and the date? So what? They could look at the book and see what condition it was. I also did some typing for the librarian. I doubt if I made much more than a $1 or so an hour. I was about 14 years old.
