The Magic of the Ordinary: Up the Lane for the Mail

Trying to look for the bright side...

in living over 700 miles from our sweet,
beautiful little grandson,
I can honestly say I've found it.

We have instead of short, little visits we might have if we lived nearby, we have all day, for a whole week, to be with Levi for the parts of his daily life:  in his house, on his turf, with his things.

All day long we watch and participate;  from the morning, where he wakes up all sweet, smiley, and whispery...

To the breakfast, naps, lunches, playtime, bath time, bedtime:  all of it.

Maybe we wouldn't see all of this if we lived closer and just had short visits and then went back home.

Today I'm sharing a sweet little ritual we were able to do with him each day while we were there with him the first week of April, just as Spring was blooming out on the Alabama countryside.

"Wanna go get the mail, Levi?"

We got him this wagon for Christmas and with his little Bumbo seat to help him sit up firmly inside, it gets a workout, he uses it a lot!

He gets so happy, he knows where we're heading.

Bump, bump, bump, up the long driveway to the mailbox!

To him, this is just a wonderful thing, he loves to be outdoors and every day it's nice outside, this is what he does in the afternoon!

Grandpa lifts him up and he retrieves the mail...

Good job, Levi!

"Nana, where are you?"

"C'mon!"

(Those adorable, kissable little chubby hands...
...and rubber-band dented wrists!)

Home again, home again, jiggety-jig!

THE MAGIC OF THE ORDINARY, a true gift.

I love his little overalls and hat. You can tell he enjoys this routine and that Grandpa enjoys it too. What a blessing for Levi to have grandparents who love him so much. You get mail similar to mine which is best read upside down!

I understand what you mean about the time spent with Levi. I live on the west coast and the rest of my family lives on the east coast. When I visit them, it is for 3 weeks usually and the quality time that I get to spend with them and my granddaughter is so much more than if I lived right there!

Precious precious precious! My heart is warmed with that little scenario! I loved that. You are so touching to read how much you appreciate those long visits. I'm sure your heart aches for that little guy daily.
I'm hoping to be a Grandma someday and I think I want to be "Nana" too. I like that! Is it all it is supposably cracked up to be as they say?
That little Levi is just squeezeable. I love how you described his little hands and wrist.
The Magic of the Ordinary is right! You always make me appreciate those simple things.
Thank you!
Tanya

We came to the same conclusion about the time thing as well, my sisters who live close by don't really add up that much more time spent with grandparents, 2 visits a year each for 10 days is a lot of concentrated time and now with the added benefit of skype and FB, you can really keep up with Levi all year long. He's very sweet by the way!

He is a doll! Love those chubby, velvety arms and hands! Great photos, love the one with him reaching in the mailbox, love the upside down paper! yes, they are so special. My gkids are nearly 700 miles away also.

Oh what a little doll baby he is!! Just adorable! I love his cute little outfit. You are so blessed to be able to spend all that time with him on your visits. I think you are right, our kids definitely don't get the same quality time with their grandparents who live nearby. I love the bumbo seat in the wagon, I will have to try that with Matthew! (if the weather ever gets nice enough that is!) xoxo ~Ali
