Vintage Toys: Happy Colors, Happy Memories....

I'm getting back into Ebay-land this week, I had taken the month of December off...and now it's back to work! I had to head out to my stash of totes and dig out a category to work on this week. Sesame Street is the category I'll start off the new year with.

These colorful vintage Sesame Street toys bring back all kinds of warm memories for me, especially with the oldest two kids. Many happy hours were spent in their toddlerhood once each morning: and all was quiet as they sat watching Sesame Street on the old console television. I could give the house a quick run-through and know where they'd be the whole time!

One of my favorite photos from those years is a picture of Jamie and Mark sitting in front of the old console television in our first little house. They were enthralled with Sesame Street, Jamie's arm was wrapped around Mark's back, they're both wearing their striped "Ernie and Bert" shirts, and each were holding onto their stuffed Bert or Ernie.

Sesame Street was the highlight of the day, and I must admit, that back then I enjoyed it immensely, too. Growing up without a television made almost any of the shows on in the mid 1980's easy entertainment for me, and I found myself laughing right along with the kids at Elmo and all the gang.

Although, I will admit Big Bird kind of drove me nuts, he was so melancholy, and just downright whiny some days. The bright colors here and the faces of these old friends bring back some really pleasant days! And come to think of it, I still love me some Oscar the Grouch!

Is Sesame Street aired on public television any longer? I hope it is. I cringe when I see what's showing on channels like Disney...yuck!

Speaking of vintage toys....
of course, having the genes I have, I keep EVERYTHING. I still have the Fisher Price Little People sets I got for Christmas each year growing up (I was 5 when I got my first one,so they're really old!) and of course I gave my two children a new on each Christmas or birthday as they grew until FP got sued and quit making them. At least once a year, we'd get them all out and make a village. Sometimes there wasn't enough room in the house for all of them, so I'd put them outside on a nice day. I still have all the sets. Now I get the new ones for my grand daughter. Anyway.... this year Hallmark made a Fisher Price Farm ornamnent. The miniature version even had the moo as the door opened. I refused to pay $16.50 for it; I still have the box my son's farm came in from 1988, and I paid $19.99 (or less; I'm sure it was on sale because I never paid full price). After Christmas I was regreting not buying it. I found it! I got the display model 1-1/2 weeks after Christmas at a little town pharmacy (not a chain!)that never used to have Hallmark stuff. It is adorable! I let my granddaughter put it on my tree (yes, it's still up!) and I got her dad's farm out of the box so we could play with it. One of these days, I'll get out all the FP Little People sets and we'll set up a town so she can play with all of them. Maybe a few neices & nephews (even the older ones) can come over & play. I know my youngest neice(age 13)has volunterred to come & play! There's nothing like vintage toys to savor memories. I may even splurge next year & buy their new toy ornament BEFORE Christmas! I keep looking at it on my tree and marveling at the miniature details!

Hey, sister five! I also called on that ornament, the farm one from Hallmark, I couldn't get past the 16.50 they wanted so I told myself I'll find one at a garage sale....I think the Hallmark people are onto something. Those old Fisher Price little people sets bring back lots of memories. I saved all of my kids' sets, and I hope someday that they will treasure them. I have my old Fisher Price cash register from childhood, but that's the only toy I have from those days. It's in pretty rough shape, too, we all used it a lot to play store! Do you remember that? Love, Joni
