Perkin' Along...

Coffee cans seem to be a recurring theme at garage sales this year.

My niece came down and spent the night Wednesday night and we got up Thursday morning and were out garage sale-ing at eight a.m. and got home around seven at night! WHEW! I found some goodies and will show but haven't taken pictures yet...just thought I'd show you some recent acquisitions from a few weeks back. I'll have pictures for you next week.

We had a fairly succesful day for her and she got some stuff, as she's getting married in about three weeks, and needed some furniture items for their apartment.

As I said yesterday, Friday was my son's last day of seventh grade. It was a beautiful, pleasant, warm day and I got Sally out and put the top down, and drove to pick him up from school. Then we went to the nearest old-fashioned A&W for a celebratory lunch. It will hopefully be a good memory for him to think about when he's older and the responsibilities of life are on his shoulders. I am one who doesn't think that a kid's life should be all sunshine and fun stuff, but today was a special day.

Next week, he begins working with dad for two days a week at the hardware to save some money for his car and insurance which will be coming up here before I know it. He'll be eligible to take driver's education next year at this time. I don't know if he will, but he'll be old enough...so, time to learn just a little about working hard, the worth of a dollar and what attaining a paycheck requires, and a bit about the adult world: pricing stock, putting it away, waiting on customers, learning procedures: a hardware store is a great place to learn to work. I am someone who is still old-fashioned enough to believe that EVERY kid isn't cut out for college, or that every kid SHOULD go. I really want him to go, but he may not. So, just in case....being prepared for life takes years of learning to work.

My reasoning for this is that if he doesn't continue his education, he will have something that is becoming more and more rare: the ability to work hard and well, and that skill will serve him, no matter what happens in his life.

Here's to hard work, and the ethic that made America strong and good for generations.

Amen to the work ethic. I very rarely see it in young people these days. I have always taught my children to work hard, do the best they can and always try to do it with a good attitude. It is very rare. My two older ones are both in college, but I agree with you 100%. I don't believe that everyone is cut out for college, but they certainly need to understand what it is like to work for a living. Hats off to you. And congrats on your 7th grade graduate!

Here, here! I totally agree with the part about hard work. We hope to instill that in our little Jimmy. Big Jim is a very hard worker, will do whatever it takes to take care of his fam, even though he has a 4 year degree in Mechanical Engineering, that doesn't always cut it, especially with me being a stay at home mom! And I can't wait to see your awesome finds next week!
